The art activities of the children of Hospicio de San Jose started as a simple fundraising in 2019 entitled ANGELS OF RENDU. The works exhibited were realistic and representative of the children's small world within the institution's compound—flowers, animals, people, and sceneries.
In 2023, these art activities were institutionalized into an Art Club. The children's works in the second exhibit, entitled EXPANDING HORIZON, covered a wider array of subjects as they discovered more of the outside world and learned varied colors and techniques from guest painters.
This year, for the art exhibit entitled ESSENCE, the children's art explores different genres such as pop, contemporary, and modernist. To quote from The Little Prince: "What is essential is invisible to the eye." So this is the common objective in their works: to bring out the essence or the dominant characteristic they see in the subject before them (as articulated by National Artist Victorio Edades). Let's enjoy how the children accomplish this using abstraction, mixed media, cubism, pointillism, and impressionism, among others. This exhibit is truly an art feast.
This art exhibit is a project of the Rotary Club of Manila, and all the proceeds will be for the construction of lodging houses in Hospicio de San Jose.
